How To Test Your Internet Performance

The folks over at Speedtest.net have one of the best free tools to check your Internet speed.  Speedtest.net is a broadband speed analysis tool provided by Ookla that allows you to test your Internet connection speed and compare it to others in your area.



Speedtest.net measures three essential metrics to determine the performance of your Internet connection.

  • Download Speed: This is the speed at which data being transferred from the Internet to your computer.
  • Upload Speed: This is the speed at which data is transferred from your computer to other computers on the Internet. For example, sending a large attachment via email to a coworker.
  • Ping (Latency): The speed at which your computer receives with other computers on the Internet by transmitting small pieces of data. A high ping rate indicates usually indicates that you are sending data through a greater number of systems over the Internet before you reach the computer your trying to communicate with.
