Charlie Hack has been selling carpet most of his adult life.

Before he opened Hack Carpet and the Carpet Corporation of America at 3 South Division St. in Rome in 1972, he served as a sales manager for Trend Mills. Only when Hack tired of all the travel associated with his post with Trend, did he decide to open his own store.

Hack Carpet has operated out of the same showroom and warehouse for the past 39 years, but the business has changed and Hack has been dedicated to keeping up with every curve call that the industry and economy have thrown at him.

A little luck and a lot of hard work is what Hack credits for his longevity in the industry. When he first opened his own shop, the carpet industry was still booming but the last three years have been some of the toughest times hack has ever seen.

Carpet tiles have been Hack’s saving grace and when you visit his 20,000-square-foot showroom and warehouse, you immediately see the commitment to carpet tiles, which Hack said Mrs. Consumer has come to understand can be installed without any special expertise and be as beautiful as if a professional carpet layer had installed them.

“It doesn’t even look like a traditional carpet store,” Hack said. Ninety percent of his business is now in carpet tiles.

Another big change for Hack involved the development of his website — www.carpet-usa.com — which he said is now responsible for the majority of his business. His website typically contains photos of as many as 800 different carpet tiles and is changed on an almost daily basis.

Hack said that he’s forced himself to stay abreast of changes in both products and customers’ buying habits.

In addition to the website, the company can be reached by phone at (706) 234-3301.
