The Junior Auxiliary of East St. Mary has partnered with the three junior high schools in the Tri-City area to reward students exhibiting good character. The program is called JA Gems. Morgan City Junior High School seventh- and eighth-grade math honors students recently traveled to Lafayette to watch a play at the Heymann Center. The play explained why math is important with the help of famous historical mathematicians including Albert Einstein, Ada Lovelace, Blaise Pascal and Pythagoras. After the play, students had a picnic lunch at Girard Park in Lafayette.

Patterson State Bank recently made a donation to the Miles Liner Foundation for the 5K run/walk “Run for Miles” scheduled April 13. The Miles Liner Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to continue the memory of Miles by providing scholarships to local high school seniors wishing to further their education. St. Mary Parish Foundation board members presented a $500 check to Morgan City High School’s Michael Swiber, band director, and Tim Hymel, vice principal, in recognition of the band’s performance at the 2012 raffle celebration. The foundation raised more than $10,000 to be given to arts and music programs through grants. At the Main Street Board of Directors meeting Feb. 6, the Rev. Chrispin Smith was presented a plaque for 15 years of dedicated service to the Main Street Program. Smith has been on the Main Street Board of Directors serving as treasurer since Morgan City became a Main Street Community in 1997. His term ended in December. Smith stated how much he loved working with the board over the years and how much he cared about the City of Morgan City.
