Boy Scout Troop 242, chartered by the American Legion Post 242 in Calumet, visited Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., during spring break. The boys, along with siblings, were invited to attend a special program offered by Disney Youth Educational Series titled Introduction to Global Citizenship at Epcot. They learned about the cultures, history, politics, diversity and demographics-geography of several countries represented at EPCOT. Boys ages 11 to 17 can call for information on how to join Troop 242 at no cost. Call 985-992-0703. Berwick, Morgan City and Patterson mayors gathered Tuesday afternoon in Morgan City to sign a proclamation designating May as “Older Americans Month.” Citizens are urged to take time this month to recognize all senior citizens as powerful and vital role models who greatly contribute to the community. Among those attending the ceremony at City Hall, front from left, were Louis Ratcliff, mayor of Berwick; Frank Grizzaffi, mayor of Morgan City; and Rodney Grogan, mayor of Patterson. The Evangeline Area Council Boy Scouts of America held a St. Mary Parish Distinguished Citizen Award ceremony Thursday night at NicoBella in Morgan City. Timothy Matte was honored as the area’s distinguished citizen and gave a speech reflecting on his service to the City of Morgan City as well as his involvement in the Boy Scouts. From left are Carlos Harbin, Scout outreach executive; Deacon Vic Bonnaffee, Central Catholic High School principal; Art Hawkins, Evangeline Area Council executive director; Louis Tamporello, Morgan City mayor pro-tem and master of ceremonies; honoree Matte, St. Mary Parish Levee District executive director; Larry Vanpelt, district vice presidetn of operations; Luke Manfre, Distinguished Citizen Dinner district chairman; Dan Duplantis, district co-vice chaiman; and Kristen Autrey, committee member.

Patterson State Bank recently made a donation to Patterson Junior High School’s Renaissance Program. The program promotes good grades and good behavior in students. Each nine weeks, students in grades five through eight who maintain a 3.0 or higher grade point average and have no referrals, receive a special card called the Renaissance Card. There are various levels of the Renaissance Card depending on the student’s grade point average. The students that earn a Renaissance Card receive a special lanyard, “Jacks Bucks” (to use in the school’s “Jack Store”) and free dress passes along with other treats the students may also earn.
