Morgan City Mayor Frank “Boo” Grizzaffi has proclaimed April School Library Month in celebration of school librarians and their programs. Every April, school librarians are encouraged to create activities to help their school and local community celebrate the essential role that strong school library programs play in a student’s educational career. A crowd gathered on Front Street in Morgan City Friday afternoon to dance and listen to music during Rhythms on the River, which featured the Don Rich Band. The free concert, held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., kicked off a series of nine which will be held through May 31. The lineup for the coming weeks is Nik L. Beer, Friday; South 70, April 19; Krossfyre, April 26; TK Hulin, May 3; Jamie Bergeron, May 10; Chubby Carrier, May 17; Good Feelin’ Band, May 24; and Déjà Vu, May 31.

Boy Scout Troop and Cub Scout Pack 242 of Calumet recently visited the Greenwood Alligator Farm in Gibson. The boys learned about the habitat and harvesting procedures of the reptiles and had an opportunity to view gators up close and personal. During the Lenten season at Holy Cross Elementary this year, students and teachers in each of Holy Cross’ 17 classes, grades Pre-K3 through 6, visited more than 20 homes in the neighborhood of the school. A Patterson man was injured when the motorcycle he was riding was involved in a three-vehicle accident at U.S. 90 and Delmar Avenue in Bayou Vista. Daniel Dobbs, 27, was driving a 2004 Suzuki, according to Tfc. Stephen Hammons, state police Troop I public information officer. The driver of the 2000 Nissan Altima was Tabitha Ghirardi, 24, of Berwick, who was cited for failure to yield at a stop sign with minor injury. The motorcycle also hit a 2005 Pontiac driven by Valerie Crappell, 43, of Morgan City who was not cited, Hammons said. The Bayou Vista Volunteer Fire Department responded with two fire trucks, one rescue truck and 21 personnel at 4:36 p.m. Dobbs was treated and released from Teche Regional Medical Center, according to Sabrina Roy, hospital spokeswoman.

Rachel Lemoine was crowned Patterson Cypress Sawmill Festival queen during the pageant held Saturday at the Patterson Area Civic Center. Named festival king was Dr. Lee Craddock of Patterson. The festival will be held April 5 to 7 at Kemper Williams Park near Patterson. At the end of the festival on April 7, the new royalty will begin their reign. Craddock is a Mexico, Mo., native. He received his bachelor’s degree from Southern Missouri University in Springfield, Mo., and a doctorate from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tenn. He has been the optometrist for Wal-Mart Vision Center in Bayou Vista for 17 years. The Patterson Rotary Club member has been involved with Sawmill Festival for about five years. He and his wife, Tammy, have three daughters. Lemoine is a Patterson High School senior and the daughter of Ellen Lemoine of Patterson and the late Glenn Lemoine.
