Morgan City Junior High School’s female students were visited Wednesday by students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Women’s Initiative. Their purpose was to raise awareness towards increasing the number of females considering engineering as a career choice. The demonstration included an activity to isolate DNA from strawberries. Some of the school’s girls are with MIT presenters Novalia Pishesha, seated center, a biological engineering graduate from Indonesia and Stephanie Ihezie, right, an undergraduate in brain and cognitive science from Texas. The theme of the krewe’s tableau was “Adonis Conquers Rome.” Not only does the krewe hold the first ball of the local season, it will also hold the first parade at 7 p.m. Feb. 8. The nighttime procession is reversed this year. The parade will start at Victor II Boulevard’s intersection with Myrtle Street and proceed down Victor II to Clothilde Street, Ninth Street, Marguerite Street, Sixth Street, Onstead Street, Federal Avenue and end at Brashear Avenue. The East St. Mary Kiwanis Club will hold its first Trivia Night at the Morgan City Municipal Auditorium on Feb. 22. The event is being held to benefit The Adullam Household of Faith, which is being built in Patterson by Bethel Pentecostal Fellowship Church in order to house the children of incarcerated mothers while they serve their sentence. In addition to the Adullam House, the event will also aid St. Mary Parish area high schools with the purchase of automated external defibrillators to be used in case of emergencies on campus. Entry for a team with a maximum of six members is $150. To enter call Casie Callais at 985-519-5660 or Selena Shannon at 985-498-1788. DSF Wealth Management has purchased two tables for the event and will be sponsoring a trivia category for the night. The first baby of the New Year at Teche Regional Medical Center in Morgan City was born at 8:02 a.m. Tuesday to Morgan City residents Cynthia Blanchard and Shea Saujon. Madilynn Grace Saujon rang in the New Year at 7 lbs., 9 ozs. with a length of 20.6 inches. The grandparents are Elaine and Nolan Saujon and Carl Blanchard and Cheryl Businelle, all of Morgan City. The Saujons will receive gift certificates and prizes donated from participating businesses in the Morgan City area for winning The Daily Review’s annual contest for the first baby born in the New Year.

An early morning accident between a white Mercedes and a school bus resulted in no injuries for the students, according to preliminary reports from the St. Mary Parish school system. The bus driver, Melanie Pellerin, was not found to be at fault, Superintendent Donald Aguillard said. The bus was transporting middle and high school students, according to Aguillard.

M C Bank employees partnered with Maison Jardin Senior Living Center and held a “Pink Day” to show support for October Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Bank employees dressed in pink and received pink hair extensions, which they were allowed to sport during October. Maison Jardin Senior Living Center collected about $2,000 with their October Pink Days. Proceeds were combined with the Morgan City High volleyball team’s “Paint the Pit Pink 2012,” which collected $16,378.45 in donations and has initiated an annual appeal to spread awareness, encourage parish-wide participation and raise funds that are vital to the ongoing research to find a cure for breast cancer. Proceeds will benefit patients residing in St. Mary Parish. Donations will be made to the Miles Perrot Foundation and the Louisiana Foundation for Cancer Care in partnership with OncoLogics.
