Daniel Wilson of Morgan City was named the Tri-City Helping Hearts Foundation Citizen of the Year during the organization’s annual fundraising banquet held Saturday at the St. Mary Senior Citizens Center in Morgan City. The retired carpenter was recognized for his many years of service to the community. He teaches Christian Education Studies in Houma. “I try to do everything according to His (God’s) will,” Wilson said. In the photo from left are foundation members Lisa Jordan, Barbara Walker and Ramon Colar, guest speaker Southern University Vice Chancellor Gloria Bartley Moultrie, foundation member the Rev. Herman Hartman, a retired Morgan City High School teacher, spoke to the U.S. history class at Central Catholic High School. Hartman spoke about what life was like for black people in Morgan City during the civil rights movement. He told the students about how his family life helped him to turn something negative into a positive learning experience. Students heard about the school life, social life, political life and more during the 1950s and 1960s. He spoke with pride about his father, who put eight children through college on a policeman’s salary. His father also drove a school bus to help educate his children. Students in Ann Burton’s and Karen Solar’s U.S. history classes studied the civil rights movement. Shown are Joe Michel, Meoshonti Knight, Solar and Hartman.

A Miles Liner Foundation 5K Run/Walk will be held Saturday at Berwick High School. Late registration through Saturday is $25. Sign in is from 7 to 8 a.m. and race time is 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Trophies will be presented to first through third place overall male and female finishers. Medals will be awarded to first through third place in each age group.
