Divine Donuts and More held its grand opening Saturday. Located at 839 U.S. 90 East as part of the St. Mary Plaza in Bayou Vista, the full-service bakery is open Mondays from 4 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesdays through Fridays from 4 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 4 a.m. to 2 p.m. Patrons can choose from doughnuts, cookies, cakes, plate lunches, fruit and vegetable trays, and special orders at the 5,000-plus square-foot facility. Cutting the ceremonial ribbon are owners Carrie and Chuck Sheehan as St. Mary Chamber of Commerce, parish officials, employees and a host of well-wishers look on.

Daniel Wilson of Morgan City was named the Tri-City Helping Hearts Foundation Citizen of the Year during the organization’s annual fundraising banquet held Saturday at the St. Mary Senior Citizens Center in Morgan City. The retired carpenter was recognized for his many years of service to the community. He teaches Christian Education Studies in Houma. “I try to do everything according to His (God’s) will,” Wilson said. Herman Hartman, a retired Morgan City High School teacher, spoke to the U.S. history class at Central Catholic High School. Hartman spoke about what life was like for black people in Morgan City during the civil rights movement. He told the students about how his family life helped him to turn something negative into a positive learning experience. Students heard about the school life, social life, political life and more during the 1950s and 1960s. He spoke with pride about his father, who put eight children through college on a policeman’s salary. His father also drove a school bus to help educate his children. Students in Ann Burton’s and Karen Solar’s U.S. history classes studied the civil rights movement. Shown are Joe Michel, Meoshonti Knight, Solar and Hartman.

A Miles Liner Foundation 5K Run/Walk will be held Saturday at Berwick High School. Late registration through Saturday is $25. Sign in is from 7 to 8 a.m. and race time is 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Trophies will be presented to first through third place overall male and female finishers. Medals will be awarded to first through third place in each age group.
