St. Mary Parish President Paul Naquin also told the West St. Mary Port Commission Tuesday that he was told that same barge has flipped over twice before.
Naquin said Lad Services LLC of Morgan City obtained the barge at sheriff’s sale for $160,000.
“If you look there’s a crane already there,” Naquin said. “I talked to the company today, Lee Dragna went paid the remainder, he put down $30,000 and paid the rest. It’s in his name now, and I hope I he got the title for it, he was on his way when I talked to him.”
The parish president said Dragna made “a deal” with the landowner to put insurance on the property, and will be installing pilings as dead-men to pull the barge upright.
“He told me his grandfather…uprighted that barge twice already, the same barge,” Naquin said. “It was built top-heavy. Now the derrick’s off, it shouldn’t be anymore. Once it’s pumped out and uprighted, it’s going to leave this area and go to Morgan City. Nothing is going to be done onsite.”
It should be a done deal within a month, Naquin said.
Naquin also said there is $2.2 million in capital outlay funding in Baton Rouge for the St. Mary Industrial Park on the Charenton Canal. “We need to use that money as fast as we can,” he said. “Try to do the infrastructure, and if any money is left over, use it for a bulkhead.”
Also Tuesday, Special Assistant to the Executive Director David Allain said D&L Salvage is interested in leasing more space from the port.
Allain said the company is expanding its business.
He said an existing road right-of-way needs to be relocated first.
That access runs along the bulkhead and next to every tenant along that area, Allain said.
Cutting it off at one end only would allow a piece of property to be utilized from the water slip to the railroad track.
Legal counsel will continue to work the details out, Allain said.
In other business, Gulf Coast Broadband is ready to put up a tower to provide wireless Internet access to the port area. A slab to erect the tower on will cost $8,015.
Gulf Coast will also erect a fence around the property for security, if the lease is accepted, Allain said.
The commission agreed to hold awarding the low bid to Superior Services of Baldwin to build the slab until the lease is finalized.
