PATTERSON — The Patterson High School baseball tournament, which begins today, will be loaded with competition, including one squad that recently made headlines for all the wrong reasons.
While Central Catholic, Class 1A’s runner-up a year ago, and E.D. White, a Class 3A state semifinalist a year ago, will return, the field also is expected to include Calvary Baptist, the defending Class 2A state champion, who has drawn media attention because members of its baseball team squad were among those involved in a video performance posted on YouTube of the “Harlem Shake” that left 40 students suspended.
The students were suspended Wednesday and are not in school today.
Calvary Baptist assistant Principal Kevin Guerrero declined to say how long the suspensions would last.
However, Patterson head baseball coach Ryan Jensen said this morning he has not received notification from Calvary Baptist that they would be pulling out of the Lumberjacks’ tournament. In fact, he said he wasn’t aware of the incident until asked about it by The Daily Review.
“They aren’t the type of program that would back out (because) they were short some players,” he said. “They will hold true to their commitment and put together a championship caliber team that shows up ready to play.”
Calvary is scheduled to participate Friday against East St. John at 5:30 p.m., and Saturday against Patterson at 9 a.m. and South Lafourche at 1:30 p.m.
Jensen said he has heard that there will be Major League scouts attending the tournament, especially Saturday, to watch a Calvary Baptist left-handed pitcher as well as some other prospects.
“It's exciting to have that kind of presence in our tournament,” he said. “I guess you can expect that when you have the 1A state runner-up, a 3A state semifinalist with five guys already signed to play in college and the 2A state champion all getting together in one tournament,” he said. “It's a great field of teams if we can just get Mother Nature to cooperate.”
While rain is predicted daily through Sunday, no games have been cancelled thus far.
Games will be played today and Friday at Patterson as well as Central Catholic’s home field in Amelia, while a single game, a matchup between Hanson Memorial and Westgate, will be played Friday at 6 p.m. at Hanson.
Saturday’s action will be played only at Patterson.
In Patterson, today’s games begin with a 3:15 contest between Houma Christian and Hanson, followed by a 5:30 p.m. matchup between South Lafourche and East St. John. The day’s action will conclude at 7:45 p.m. when E.D. White and Patterson play.
In Amelia today, Westgate and Central Catholic will play at 4:30 p.m., followed by Westgate and Houma Christian at 6:45 p.m.
On Friday, Mamou will meet Patterson at 3:15 p.m. and following Calvary Baptist’s matchup with East St. John, Mamou and E.D. White will play at 7:45 p.m.
In Amelia, Houma Christian and Central Catholic will play at 3:15 p.m., followed by St. Martins and South Lafourche at 5:30 p.m.
Saturday after Calvary Baptist meets Patterson, Hanson and St. Martins will play at 11:15 a.m.
Following South Lafourche and Calvary Baptists’ contest, East St. John and St. Martins will play at 3:45 p.m. and South Lafourche and Mamou at 6 p.m.
Central Catholic and E.D. White will close the tournament with an 8:15 p.m. contest.
