At 12:15 p.m. Friday, 31-year-old Luis Mota of Morgan City was driving a 2000 Ford Escort east on La. 182, Hammons reported. Mota was attempting to enter a parking lot when he turned in close proximity to a 2007 International freight truck driven by 52-year-old James Hughes of Thibodaux, he stated. The right side of Mota’s vehicle was struck by Hughes’ vehicle, he stated. After initial impact both vehicles traveled off the roadway and stuck three unoccupied vehicles in the parking lot, Hammons reported.
Hughes was restrained and sustained minor injuries.
Two passengers in Mota’s vehicle, 58-year-old Lamberto Mota of Morgan City and Carlos Camacho of Morgan City, were pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Mary Parish coroner, he stated Luis Mota sustained moderate injuries and was taken to a hospital. Lamberto Mota was the only occupant restrained in the vehicle, he stated.
It is unknown if impairment was a factor in the crash; however, toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
