A Morgan City man garnered a litany of charges after he caused an accident on the E.J. “Lionel” Grizzaffi Memorial U.S. 90 Bridge late Sunday night.

Robert Campbell, 23, of Catherine Street in Morgan City was charged at 11:25 p.m., with reckless operation of a vehicle, hit and run driving, second offense driving while intoxicated and driving under suspension.

According to witnesses, they were travelling west on U.S. 90 when they observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed. That vehicle, driven by Campbell, then struck the rear of their vehicle causing the crash, Morgan City Police Chief Marc Folse said.

While officers were en route to investigate the crash near the Federal Avenue exit of the bridge, they were notified that one of the vehicles had left the scene. It was travelling east in the westbound lane and was finally located near the Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard exit. Folse said Campbell appeared to be in an intoxicated state.

Campbell advised officers that he had taken several pills of Klonopin and had smoked marijuana. He was taken to Teche Regional Medical Center where he consented to have his blood drawn. The results are pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.

Campbell remained jailed this morning with no bail set.
