ALEXANDRIA – The City Council on Tuesday night banned smoking in bars and gambling rooms within the city, as well as snuffing it within 25 feet of city property, athletic facilities and ballparks.
The new law is effective Jan. 2.
Smoking is still permitted in hotels and motels, as state law allows for up to half of the rooms to be classified as smoking.
This annoys me! I'm not a smoker, but if I owned a bar and banned smoking in my bar, that is one thing. But if I allowed my clientele to smoke in my bar owned by me -- it should be allowed. If someone else doesn't like being in cigarette smoke, they don't have to go to the bar. I can understand government banning smoking in government facilities -- they have that right. I do not see where they have the right to ban it in privately owned businesses. No one is being forced to go into this business -- it is by choice only. If you don't like the smoke -- STAY OUT!
