The two-story facility built in the 1950s was closed in late May for the $2.2 million renovation, St. Mary Library system Director Julie Champagne Vidos told members of the Franklin Rotary Club Tuesday.
It has been gutted with new construction under way from the ground up.
That includes relocation to the ground of six air conditioning units that were on the roof. Condensation runoff from the units was creating an unwanted green space with weeds growing in abundance, Vidos said.
“Our root structure was keeping our roof structure in place,” she said.
The project is being funded with proceeds from a bond package approved by voters in October 2008 that is secured by the system’s 1.25-mill maintenance and capital improvement property tax.
Cheramie and Bruce Architects of Houma designed the plans and Bonneval Construction Co. Inc. of Patterson is the contractor.
Library services are still being provided while the branch is closed at the South Louisiana Community College across the street from the library on Perret Street.
Readers can also barrow e-books by accessing the Bayouland E-Book Co-op from the library’s website at www.stmary.lib.la.us.
