Senate candidate Bret Allain spoke on his qualifications for office and provided the evening’s meal. Members were treated to shrimp stew, rice, peas, potato salad and bread.
Another guest speaker was Dr. Chris Stewart, a new orthopedic surgeon at Teche Regional Medical Center in Morgan City. He told members about methods of treatment in which he specializes.
Entertainment included a performance by the “Les Danseur de Bonne Terre” from Houma and a 15-minute comedy “A Bus Called Home” presented by the AARP Players.

—The next St. Mary AARP Chapter meal will be Monday at Tampico Restaurant in Morgan City and will feature a choice of two meals — taco or burrito — at $12 each, all inclusive. Tickets must be purchased in advance at the AARP office. For information call 384-2277.
—Members were invited to get flu shots at the Oct. 3 meeting. Medicare Part B and Medicaid patients will not pay anything, but must bring their cards and a completed form available at the AARP office. Walgreens will dispense shots from 4 p.m. until the meeting starts. Those not on Medicare or Medicaid may pay a nominal fee for the shot.
—The next defensive driving class for St. Mary AARP members will be Nov. 8. Ernest McMurray will be the instructor. There are a few openings for this last class of the year. Pre-register and pay the $12 or $14 fee prior to the class. Call 384-2277 for details.
—The election of St. Mary AARP officers and board members will be on Nov. 7. The Oct. 3 meeting will be the last time to submit a name for the election. Officers and board members must be dues paying St. Mary AARP members.
—The Jan. 28, 2012, Annual St. Mary AARP Mardi Gras Court is seeking court members and entertainers. Volunteer at the AARP office on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays until Oct. 31. Ann Lombardo is in charge of the event.
—St. Mary AARP upcoming trips include: Branson trip — Nov. 20-24, $759 per person double occupancy. Fee includes bus trip, rooms at Grand Country Inn, seven shows, two activities and seven meals. —The Oct. 3 meeting will feature a meal of fried catfish, white beans, rice and salad as provided by Parish President Paul Naquin and St. Mary Parish Councilman Kevin Voisin. Sterling Fryou and Mac McNemar and their cooks will prepare the meal.
