AMITE – An Amite man died Tuesday night when his car left the road, hit a tree and exploded.

State Police said the accident occurred shortly before 11 p.m. on La. 1054 about two miles south of La. 16.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the crash occurred as Michael Jones, Jr., 25, was traveling north on LA 1054 in a 2007 Hyundai Sonata when, for unknown reasons, he failed to maneuver a curve in the roadway and began to run off road to the right.

Upon leaving the roadway, Jones overcorrected back to the left causing the Hyundai to reenter LA 1054 and continue across the north and southbound lanes before running off road to the left.

As the Hyundai continued off road on the west side of LA 1054, it impacted a tree with its left front end and became engulfed in flames.

Due to the extent of the fire, seatbelt use is unknown; however, investigating Troopers suspect alcohol impairment to have been a factor in the crash.
