“How the New Orleans Saints Saved” the NFL will be the topic of a history discussion to be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Jeanerette Bicentennial Park and Museum located at 500 E. Main St., Jeanerette.

The talk will be led by Professor Michael Martin, associate professor of ULL’s Department of History and the director of the Center of Louisiana Studies. He will provide an overview of the creation of the New Orleans Saints football franchise in 1965. The discussion will also address the political wheeling-and-dealing that went on in Louisiana and Washington, D.C., to get the National Football League an antitrust exemption so that the NFL could absorb its increasingly competitive rival, the American Football League.

Martin who is the director of the Center of Louisiana Studies and associate professor in ULL’s Department of History, leads courses at the university on Louisiana, Public History, the U. S. South, and Colonial and Revolutionary North America, and supervises graduate student research in those fields. He also serves as managing editor of the state’s historical journal, Louisiana History.

Martin’s research interests focus on twentieth-century Louisiana and southern history. Martin’s recent publications include Historic Lafayette; New Orleans Becomes a Big-League City: The NFL-AFL Merger and the Creation of the New Orleans Saints, Horsehide, Pigskin, Oval Tracks and Apple Pie: Essays on Sports and American Culture; and High Time We Put Behind Us the Blind Prejudice of the Past: Russell Long and Louisiana Politics, 1948-1952.

Martin is a native of Lafayette and earned both his B.A. (1994) and M.A. (1997) in history from the then-University of Southwestern Louisiana. Martin earned his Ph.D. in American History at the University of Arkansas and, for two years prior to returning to ULL, worked as a research associate at the Albert Gore Sr. Research Center of Middle Tennessee State University. He has taught at ULL since 2003.
