Service of the Avoca Island Ferry will be disrupted for at least seven to 10 days beginning today.

St. Mary Chief Administrative Officer Henry “Bo” LaGrange told the parish council Wednesday that the ferry will be put in dry dock after preliminary inspection by the U.S. Coast Guard.

“The last couple of weeks we’ve been working with the Coast Guard and they made a strong recommendation that we dry dock it and inspect the hull on it,” LaGrange said. “It was noted that we have a small, the industry term is transference (meaning) it’s taking on water or (has) a small leak. … It’s not sinking.”

A marine surveyor will inspect the vessel and make recommendations of needed repairs, he added.
