MARKSVILLE – According to Avoyelles Sheriff Doug Anderson, at about 9 p.m. Thursday his office received a call for assistance regarding a hunter who was found dead earlier in the evening on School Board property near the Lake Ophelia NWR.

The Sheriff said that according to reports, a 40-year-old Marksville man was hunting when he failed to return home after the evening hunt.

Initially, friends of the man began a search and located him near the base of the deer stand he was hunting with an apparent gunshot wound to the chest.

Sheriff Anderson said that investigators from the Sheriff and Coroner’s office responded to the scene.

Investigative evidence points to the victim's death caused by a fatal gunshot wound to the chest area when the weapon accidentally discharged while he was descending from his deer stand earlier that evening.
