Mayor Wayne Breaux announced that the Town of Baldwin received confirmation of a $1 million state Municipalities Infrastructure grant for flood protection in the Bayou Choupique area during the Board of Aldermen monthly meeting Thursday.

Breaux said they should begin developing the plan for the project within the next month.

Also Thursday, Beverly Domengeaux, St. Mary Parish Council on Aging director, told the mayor and board that COA is sponsoring “A Grand Tribute” on Sunday, Sept. 11 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Bayou Vista Community Center.

The event is intended to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 attack on America, honor grandparents on Grandparents Day, celebrate COA’s 34th anniversary and meet the candidates in upcoming parish-wide elections.

The public is invited to attend and enjoy music, refreshments, games and door prizes.

Domengeaux also expressed her frustration with having to turn down seniors due to lack of funding and the continuing budget cuts from Washington.

“Seniors built our community,” Domengeaux said, “Don’t make us lose our benefits or programs to balance the budget.”

She asked the mayor and aldermen for their support.

The mayor and board also heard from Richard LeGrier III, Louisiana Circles coordinator at UMCOR-Sager Brown. LeGrier asked the board to consider including Louisiana Circles in future budgets to help fund the organization that teaches citizens the skills they need to overcome poverty.

LeGrier also announced that the next Getting Ahead class would begin Sept. 13. Interested persons should call 923-6238 to register for the class.

In other business:

—The mayor announced that the Branch Street housing rehabilitation program should begin construction within the next 30 - 60 days.

—The board agreed to consider funding for the District 1 Summer Enrichment Program if the town sees an increase in revenue.

—A request to use the Baldwin Community Center as a polling place for Precinct 4 was approved.

—A resolution for the 2011 tax millage to be set at 11.81 mills, the same amount as last year, was approved.

—A bucket drive for the Hot Topix Social Club to be held Saturday, Aug. 20 was approved.

—A request for an occupational license for B&M Pavilion located at 415 Bollard St. was approved. The pavilion, owned by Barbara and Michael Lancelin Sr., is available for special event rentals.
