A man who habitually begged businesses and their customers for charity was arrested Friday.

Darren Michael Freeman, 31, of Saturn Road in Bayou Vista was arrested at 12:17 p.m. Friday for vagrancy.

The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office received a complaint from a Bayou Vista business of a man asking for cigarettes. While responding to that complaint, the sheriff’s department received a second complaint from Walmart in Bayou Vista stating that a man who previously had been on the premises asking patrons for money and goods was back in the store, Sheriff Mark Hebert said.

The deputy located Freeman and, through the course of the investigation, identified him as the person who has habitually begged businesses and their patrons for money or goods. In some instances, Freeman became aggressive in his requests for charity, Hebert said.

Numerous business owners and members of the public repeatedly notified the sheriff’s office about Freeman’s behavior, the sheriff noted.

He remains jailed this morning in lieu of $250 bail.
