METAIRIE — Berwick put up a solid effort, but it just couldn’t repeat last year’s performance against Haynes Academy as the Lady Panthers fell 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 26-24) Thursday in Division 3 first-round playoff action.

Berwick and Haynes Academy entered Thursday’s matchup exactly as they had a year ago. Berwick was the No. 19 seed, while Haynes was the No. 14 seed. The game, just as it was last year, was played at Haynes Academy.

It’s just that this time, the result wasn’t the same.

In the first game, Haynes (19-10) jumped out to an 8-1 lead, but Berwick closed the gap to one at 10-9 and later at 20-19 before falling 25-21.

In game two, the game was tied at 4 early, but Haynes pulled away later and won 25-17.

In game three, both teams were tied at 7 and later, Berwick (10-20) took an 18-12 lead.

Haynes eventually came back to tie the game at 19, and later, the score was tied at 23.

Haynes closed the game on a serve by Katie Philippi for the 26-24 victory.

Few individual statistics were available for Berwick as of press time, but Elizabeth Hover finished with four kills, while Abigail Askew added three. Abigail Ohlin recorded three assists.

Taylor Tucker had a solid game for Haynes as she recorded seven kills, three aces and a game-high 16 digs, while Philippi turned in a stat line of nine kills, four aces and seven digs.

Haynes will continue postseason play in the second round as it travels to Lafayette for a matchup with No. 3 Teurlings Catholic, who was awarded a first-round bye because it was one of Division 3’s top eight seeds.
