Progressive Waste Solutions is going up on its cart rate to municipalities, causing them to go up on billing rates for customers across the parish, Mayor Louis Ratcliff said.
In Berwick, the price will rise from $19 to $19.50. Even though Progressive began assessing the fee increase Nov. 1, the town must raise its rates by ordinance which takes introduction, a layover of 30 days, a public hearing and then adoption before implementation.
Also at Tuesday’s council meeting, Police Chief James Richard warned residents about recent Louisiana black bear sightings in residential neighborhoods.
One bear was in a neighborhood tree on River Road over the weekend, while others have been reported in Renwick Subdivision.
If bears are sighted, call the police department, the chief said, because they are equipped to deal with the threatened species. Do not approach or shoot at them, he said.
Also, place garbage at the curb shortly before pickup and retrieve the can shortly after, he said. Bears are foraging at this time of year, and garbage is an easy food source, he added.
In other action Tuesday, the council:
—Learned the police department recently received a speed monitor trailer. It can serve as a message board and provide traffic counts, but cannot issue tickets and has no camera.
—Approved a partial payment for work on Renwick Subdivision phase five for $165,473. Work is about 90 percent complete, having been slowed slightly by recent rains. Engineer Reid Miller said he anticipates substantial completion in January.
—Expanded the agenda to approve a resolution requesting $35,000 in Office of Community Development grants for water meter improvements on Francis and Pharr streets.
—Approved numerous liquor licenses for 2013.
—Reappointed Eunice Cunningham to the Berwick Housing Authority board for a five-year term.
