The Berwick High School Panthers went 2-1 in the A&E Basin Bengal Classic this weekend with wins against Assumption and Morgan City, while the squad fell to Vandebilt Catholic.

The Panthers (3-1) fell in its Friday contest against Vandebilt, 15-10, before rebounding with wins against Assumption, 13-3 and Morgan City, 9-5 on Saturday.

Against Vandebilt, five Berwick pitchers saw time on the mound, with Drew Landry suffering the loss. He allowed six earned runs on two hits and two walks, while failing to record an out.

Another BHS pitcher, Brannon Melancon, pitched four innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits with eight strikeouts in four innings of work.

At the plate, Reed Leonard led the Panthers with a 3-for-4 performance with a single, two doubles and an RBI, while Chris Charpentier finished 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Against Assumption, Nick Duthu got the win for the Panthers, surrendering three runs (one earned) on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts in four innings of work, while Charpentier struck out two in an inning of work.

At the plate, Duthu finished 1-for-1 with a home run and an RBI, while Ian Bergeron finished 2-for-2 with a single, a double and three RBI.

Other BHS offensive contributors included Trey Williams, 1-for-4 with a triple and three RBI; and Bobby Boudreaux and Lee Rhodes, 1-for-3 with a single each.

Against Morgan City, Leonard earned the win. In 62/3 innings, he surrendered five runs (three earned) on eight hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

In relief, Charpentier pitched a third of an inning and surrendered one walk and struck out one.

At the plate, Charpentier led the Panthers with a 2-for-5 performance with a single, a double and three RBI, while Bergeron added a 2-for-2 performance with a single, a triple and an RBI.

Other BHS contributors included Rhodes, 3-for-3 with two singles and a double; Leonard, 2-for-5; Matt Skelton, 1-for-3; Duthu, 1-for-1; and Brooks Richard, 1-for-2.

Buck Gautreaux led Morgan City at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance with a double and a run scored, while Ryan Veillion went 2-for-3.

Other Tigers contributing offensively included Brandon Beadle, 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI; Nicholas Spinella, 2-for-3; Brennan Ashley, 1-for-1; Craig Mayon, 1-for-1 with a run; and Brennan Scully, an RBI.

On the mound, Nick Gagliano pitched 31/3 innings for Morgan City and surrendered three runs (one earned) on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

The loss was one of two on the weekend for Morgan City, who went 1-2 in the A&E Basin Bengal Classic with a 4-2 victory against Thibodaux Saturday and a 12-1 loss on Friday to Central Lafourche.

“For the most part, we did a good job of situational hitting and running the bases, even though those things came back to get us beat in the last game,” Morgan City coach Marc Gonzales said. “We found some guys that can help on the mound.

“We also have some things to improve on,” Gonzales added. “We gave away too many free runs defensively. Some young guys need to step up defensively and we need to do a better job of controlling the running game from the pitcher’s mound.”

In Friday’s five-inning loss, the Tigers managed just one run, which they scored in the second inning on one hit.

Dylan Hymel, who finished 1-for-2 with a triple and a run, had Morgan City’s lone hit, while Josh Glatter had the Tigers’ lone RBI.

Spinella was tagged with the loss, surrendering nine earned runs on nine hits with three walks and five strikeouts in four innings of work.

Against Thibodaux, Scully led the Tigers with a 1-for-3 performance with a run and two RBI, while Veillion was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Gautreaux added a 1-for-3 performance with a run.

On the mound, Hymel pitched a complete game for Morgan City, surrendering two earned runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Patterson splits

Patterson High School finished the weekend 1-1 in its tournament with a 13-6 victory against Westgate before falling 11-1 to E.D. White in the tournament finale.

Cameron Clements led Patterson at the plate with a 4-for-4 performance with two singles, two doubles, a run and RBI, as well as a stolen base. Jaydrick DeClouet added a 3-for-4 performance with three singles and two RBI and stolen bases.

Other PHS offensive standouts included Cameron Fontenot, 1-for-3 with a double, a run, an RBI and was hit by a pitch; Ryan Wade, 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run; Chase Martin, 1-for-3 with a run, an RBI and a walk; Spencer Landry, 1-for-4 with two runs; Bryce Tabor, 1-for-3 with a walk; Micah Gowan, 1-for-2 with a walk; Dallas Hamlett, two runs and a walk; and Aaron Hazel, a run and a stolen base.

“We swung the bats much better and were able to string some hits together and put pressure on their defense,” Patterson coach Ryan Jensen said.

On the mound, Tabor pitched six innings and surrendered six runs (four earned) on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts, while Gowan pitched an inning and surrendered one hit and a walk and struck out one.

“Bryce did a good job of battling on the mound for us and honestly got better as the game went on,” Jensen said. “Micah once again got the job done in the 7th and secured the win.”

Against E.D. White, the ’Jacks were limited to two hits and committed 10 errors.

Clements again led the ’Jacks at the plate with a 1-for-2 performance with a double and was hit by a pitch; while Fontenot finished 1-for-3 with a single.

On the mound, Landry pitched four innings and surrendered six runs (three earned) on five hits with three walks and recorded a strikeout.

Also at the PHS Tournament, CCHS went 1-1 this weekend with a 17-2 victory against Centerville in five innings on Friday, while the squad fell to South Lafourche by an almost identical score, 17-1, on Saturday.

In Friday’s win, Barron Courtney led the Eagles with a 2-for-3 performance with a two-run home run and three RBIs.

Other CCHS offensive leaders included Justin Arceneaux, 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored; Samuel Guarisco, 1-for-3 with two RBIs; Eriq Blanchard, 2-for-3 with a run scored; Bryson Barbier, 1-for-1 with a double and three runs scored; Ryan Ratcliff, 1-for-1 with a double; Nick Longman, 1-for-1 with two runs scored; Ridge Rousseau, 1-for-2 with two runs scored; and Matthew Barbier, 2-for-2.

On the mound, Blanchard pitched five innings and surrendered two runs (zero earned) on four hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

“Eriq Blanchard deserves a lot of credit for throwing strikes and doing what was asked of him,” CCHS coach Tyler Jensen said. “We couldn’t have asked for a better outing from him. I was proud of the guys for taking care of business early and allowing some of the younger guys some opportunities the rest of the game.”

In Saturday’s loss to South Lafourche, Rousseau led the Eagles at the plate with a 1-for-2 performance with a run scored, while B. Barbier finished 1-for-2, and Austin Autin finished 1-for-3.

On the mound, Longman pitched two innings and surrendered six runs (three earned) on four hits with two walks).

Autin also pitched three innings and gave up four runs (three earned) on three hits with five walks and one strikeout.

“I am very disappointed with our effort today,” Jensen said. “We seemed like a completely different team out there. Just when I thought we were getting better and getting over that hump of inconsistency, today happens. I want to give credit to Matthew Barbier who came in late in the game and did exactly what was asked of him.”

Lady Panthers finish 2-1 in Donaldsonville

The Berwick Lady Panthers finished 2-1 in the Ascension Catholic Tournament with a 12-1 win over Plaquemine and a 5-3 victory against Westminster after falling 6-3 in its tournament opener to Catholic-Point Coupee.

Against Catholic-Pointe Coupee, Megan Fegenbush suffered the loss, while Elizabeth Hover led the Panthers at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance with a triple. Both Haley Girard and Abigail Ohlin also went 1-for-3 for the Lady Panthers.

On Saturday against Plaquemine, Shelby Bergeron picked up the win, while Ohlin led the Lady Panthers at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance with a home run.

Other BHS offensive contributors included Girard, 2-for-4 with a triple; Fegenbush, 2-for-3 with a double; Amber Girard, 2-for-4; Hover, 1-for-4 with a double; and Alexis Kates, 1-for-2.

Against Westminster, Fegenbush (1-3) earned the win.

At the plate, Ohlin led the way with a 2-for-4 performance with two triples, while Hover finished 1-for-3 with an RBI, and both Courtney Henry and Maddie Gray each finished 1-for-3 with an RBI apiece.

Lady Tigers go 1-2 in Lafayette High Tourney

The Morgan City Lady Tigers went 1-2 in action this weekend in the Lafayette High School Tournament.

The Tigers began the weekend with a 16-2 victory against South Plaquemines on Friday but dropped their next two on Saturday to False River, 11-8 and Lafayette, 4-1.

Against South Plaquemines, Katelyn Adams led the Lady Tigers with a 1-for-2 performance with three runs, two RBI, two walks and a home run.

Brandi Ingram also shined at the plate with a 1-for-3 performance with two runs, three RBI, a double and was hit by a pitch, while Amber Bailey recorded a 1-for-3 performance with three runs, two RBI, one walk and three stolen bases.

Other MCHS players contributing at the plate included Tyler Hebert 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI; Taylor Prince, three RBI and a sacrifice; Shannon Theriot, 1-for-3 with a walk; Marilynn Bailey, two runs, two walks and two stolen bases; Nikki Pennison, two runs; and Reina Fernandez, two runs and a walk.

On the mound, Hebert recorded 10 strikeouts and surrendered a walk.

Against False River, Adams again led the Lady Tigers, with a 2-for-4 performance with two runs, an RBI and a home run, while Theriot added a 2-for-3 performance with a double and a run, a walk, an RBI and a stolen base.

Other MCHS offensive contributors included Ingram, 2-for-3 with two runs, a stolen base and was hit by a pitch; Pennison, 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI; Hebert, 1-for-4 with two RBI; Fernandez, 1-for-4 with a double and a run; A. Bailey, 1-for-4 with a stolen base; and M. Bailey, 1-for-4 with a run.

On the mound, Hebert struck out two and walked one.

Against Lafayette, Theriot led the Lady Tigers with a 1-for-2 performance with a double, a walk and a run; while Ingram added a 1-for-3 performance with a double and an RBI. Adams and Hebert each went 1-for-3, with Adams adding a double.

On the mound, Prince, recorded two strikeouts and a walk.

CCHS finishes 2-1 in

Thibodaux Tourney

Central Catholic finished 2-1 in the Thibodaux Tournament this weekend with an 8-3 win against Assumption and an 11-4 victory against Houma Christian, while falling to Assumption, 10-3.

Against Thibodaux on Friday, Megan Landry earned the win, pitching seven innings and surrendering three runs (two earned) on 11 hits with eight strikeouts.

At the plate, Celine Flores led the Lady Eagles with two hits, including a double, two runs and an RBI, while Caroline Byrne added a double, a run and an RBI. Amanda Barron added a double.

Other CCHS contributors included Kimberly Russo, two hits, a run and an RBI; Landry, a hit, a run and an RBI; Olivia Crawford, a hit, a run and a stolen base; Hailee Thomas, a hit and a run; and Abby Bergeron and Brittany Longman, a hit each.

Against Houma Christian, Landry earned the win, surrendering four runs (three earned) on eight hits, while recording eight strikeouts.

Against Assumption, Barron led the Lady Eagles with a double, an RBI and a run, while Byrne added two hits, an RBI and a run.
