For the first time in more than a season, the Berwick boys’ basketball team picked up a victory, snapping a lengthy losing streak with a 35-29 victory over Delcambre in nondistrict action at home Monday.

Berwick (1-13) outscored Delcambre in every quarter except the third en route to the win.

“I am very proud of the guys,” Berwick coach John Menard said of his squad, who went winless during the 2010-11 season. “They played extremely hard, and I am happy that they were rewarded for their effort.”

Nick Osburn and Devin Tabor reached double figures for Berwick with 10 points apiece, while Palmer Cox added seven, Nick Canty chipped in four, and Joe Francois and Chaz Russo added two apiece.

Coupled with the win, Menard said his squad had its best defensive rebounding performance this season on Monday night.

“We limited them to one shot on most of their offensive trips,” Menard said. “Offensively we did a good job of getting good shots and made adjustments well when they changed defenses. This is just what this young team needed. I hope we can build on this as we move into the next half of the season.”

In the girls’ game, Berwick also defeated Delcambre, 46-31.

Abigail Ohlin led the locals with 21 points, while Khadijah Johnson added eight. Other Berwick scorers included Amber Girard, six; Haley Girard, five; Haley Wilkinson, four; and Blake Orgeron, two.

With the win, the Lady Panthers improve to 2-11 on the season.

In other local action, the Patterson boys’ basketball squad defeated St. Michael, 29-24, in the Runnels Tournament.

Despite the win, in which the ’Jacks held St. Michael scoreless in the second quarter, Patterson coach Ryan Taylor said the game was a “sluggish” one.

“We didn’t execute on offense like we should have,” Taylor said. “St. Michael’s did a good job a controlling the pace of the game. They handled our pressure well and didn’t take bad shots. We were fortunate that our half court defense was solid. We are in a little funk on the offensive end but we just need to continue to work, and we will pull out of it.”

The ’Jacks were limited to single digit scoring outputs in all four quarters. However, the ’Jacks defense did the same to St. Michael except for the third quarter when they allowed St. Michael to score 12 points.

Dylan Sanders led the ’Jacks with eight points, while Tremaine Lightfoot and Deondre Skinner added six points apiece. Gino Hall added five, Traylon Jennings had three, and Mark Jones scored one.

The ’Jacks will continue tournament play today with a matchup against Loranger at 6:45 p.m.
