The Berwick Lady Panthers defeated their rival, the Patterson Lumberjills, 10-5, Thursday in District 9-3A softball action in Berwick.
The Lady Panthers (6-6, 2-0 in district) exploded for nine runs during the first three innings to take a commanding 9-0 lead. Patterson rallied with five runs combined during the fourth and fifth innings, but it wasn’t enough.
Megan Fegenbush (5-5) earned the complete game victory for the Lady Panthers. In seven innings, she surrendered five runs on three hits with two walks and struck out two.
Courtney Henry led the Lady Panthers at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance with a home run, three RBI and a run.
Megan Fabre also homered for the Lady Panthers. She finished 1-for-3 with a run, a walk and two RBI.
Other BHS hitters included Abigail Ohlin, 1-for-2 with a triple, two runs, four stolen bases and a walk; Amber Girard, 3-for-3 with two runs, a stolen base and an RBI; Haley Girard, 1-for-2 with two runs, two stolen bases and a walk; Olivia Gilbert, 1-for-3 with a run, a stolen base and a walk; Celeste Bowers, 1-for-3 with an RBI; Fegenbush, 1-for-4 with an RBI; and Elizabeth Hover, 1-for-3 with a run and a walk.
For Patterson, Taylor Hall pitched one and two-thirds of an inning and surrendered five runs (four earned) on four hits with two walks, while Carissa Fontenot pitched five and one-third innings and surrendered five runs (four earned) on six hits with two walks.
Caitlyn Fontenot led the ’Jills with a 2-for-4 performance with a run and an RBI, while Carissa Fontenot added a 2-for-4 performance with an RBI. Arianna Ross and Jordon Aucoin each finished 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI for the ’Jills
The ’Jills will return to action Tuesday when they continue District 9-3A action at home against Kaplan.
The Lady Panthers will return to action today when they open play in the Parkview Baptist Tournament at 3:30 p.m. against Rayne. Berwick will continue play on Saturday at 1 p.m. against E.D. White and again at 5 p.m. against Brusly.
Morgan City run-rules
The Morgan City Lady Tigers opened District 8-4A play in dominating fashion with a 10-0, five-inning victory against Ellender Memorial.
On the mound, Tyler Hebert surrendered five hits and two walks and struck out two.
“Our defense played a very aggressive game and rallied behind our pitching,” MCHS coach Kelli Jo Aucoin said.
Shannon Theriot led the Lady Tigers at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance with a triple, three RBI, a run and a stolen base, while Amber Bailey finished 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI, a run and a sacrifice.
Other MCHS offensive contributors included Hebert, 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and two runs; Brandi Ingram, 1-for-3 with a double; Reina Fernandez, 1-for-2 with a run; Nikki Pennison, two runs and two RBI; Marilynn Bailey, an RBI; and Katelyn Adams, a run and a walk.
“We were very disciplined at the plate, being patient and driving the ball,” Aucoin said. “Today’s goal was not to leave runners on the base path. This was a big win for us, being our first district game.”
The Lady Tigers (8-4 overall, 1-0 in district) will return to action today in the Hahnville Tournament when they face Destrehan at 8 p.m. The squad will resume play Saturday against Albany at 4 p.m. and again at 8 p.m. against Central Lafourche.
