Lafayette - Louisiana State Police Superintendent Colonel Mike Edmonson on Wednesday promoted Becket Breaux to the rank of Captain.

Effective immediately Captain Breaux will serve as the commander for Louisiana State Police Troop I in Lafayette. He is the 15th commander of Troop I since it was formed in 1936.

Captain Breaux is a native of St. Martin Parish, where he resides with his wife and two kids today.

Captain Breaux began his career in law enforcement at the age of 17 when he was hired by the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office.

In January of 1990, Captain Breaux was hired by Louisiana State Police Troop I and began working as a patrol trooper upon his graduation from the 67th State Police Academy.

As a trooper, Captain Breaux also worked in the Criminal Patrol Unit, narcotics section, detective section, and intelligence section.

After being promoted to sergeant in 2007, Captain Breaux served as the supervisor of the Special Operations Section at Troop I. Captain Breaux was later promoted to lieutenant of the same section where he served until his most recent promotion.

Throughout his career Captain Breaux has been awarded numerous awards. He was a 1992 Trooper of the Year nominee and received the 1992 100 Club Officer of the Year award. He has also been awarded the Meritorious Service award, two Unit Citations, West District Detectives Certificate of Recognition and an FBI Certificate of Recognition.

Captain Breaux attended UL Lafayette and is a recent graduate of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command.

After receiving the news of his promotion Captain Breaux said, “I am both humbled and honored to be promoted by Colonel Edmonson. I plan to continue our level of service to the public as well as our level of commitment to working with our local agencies.”

Captain Breaux added, “One of my main goals is reaching out to the youth in our area. We will do all that we can to educate them about various laws, as well as serving as positive role models for them.”

Troop I encompasses Lafayette, St. Martin, St. Mary, St. Landry, Evangeline, Iberia, Vermilion and Acadia parishes. Troop I is responsible for over 8,500 highway miles and covers over 5,600 square miles.
