MORGAN CITY — Central Catholic honored its volleyball team during an awards ceremony Wednesday.

The ceremony also marked the close of the final volleyball season for head coach Kindra Halverson, who has resigned her post as volleyball coach and will be moving back home to Oregon after the conclusion of the 2012-13 school year.

Central Catholic Principal Vic Bonnaffee lauded Halverson for her work at Central Catholic, while during her remarks, Halverson reflected on her time at Central Catholic as well as the team.

The Lady Eagles finished their season with a 26-12 mark, won the district championship and fell in the Division 5 state semifinals, a round they have advanced to for three consecutive years.

As for the awards, among those that were honored were District 5, Division 5 Academic and athletic All-District selections, as well as Academic All-State composite selections.

The Lady Eagles dominated their competition on the court as they never lost a set in their four district contests, winning many in dominant fashion.

They also dominated the All-District squads with 10 selections, including District Most Valuable Player Meo Knight and five of the six spots on the first team.

It’s the third consecutive year Knight has been named the district’s MVP.

During district, Knight recorded 31 kills, 23 digs and six solo blocks.

First-team selections were juniors Geralyn Garrett and Brie Hill, and seniors Abbie Bergeron, Celine Flores and Caroline Byrne.

Garrett recorded an ace, two digs, 14 kills and four solo blocks, while Hill had three aces, four digs, 21 kills, two block assists and four solo blocks.

Bergeron finished her district season with four aces and 32 digs, while Flores had five aces, 21 digs and 14 kills and Byrne had 15 aces, four digs, a kill and 79 assists.

Central Catholic put two on the second team, one on the honorable mention squad and another on the All-Defensive squad.

Seniors Amanda Barron and Maria Templet made the second team, while sophomore Brittany Longman was an honorable mention selection and junior Olivia Crawford was named to the All-Defensive squad.

Barron finished the district season with five digs, 16 kills a solo block and four assists, while Templet had six aces, 13 digs and a kill.

Longman had nine aces, four digs and a kill and Crawford, eight aces and 11 digs.

The Lady Eagles also placed 14 of the 16 members of its squad on the Academic All-District squad, reserved for those who have maintained at least a 3.0 grade point average.

Additionally, Byrne and Bergeron each made the Academic All-State Composite Volleyball team, which is represented by senior athletes with a 4.0 GPA. The squad is comprised of seniors in all classifications.
