MORGAN CITY — The Central Catholic Lady Eagles picked up a huge upset victory Monday as they knocked off Class 2A’s top-ranked squad, University Lab, 57-54.
The Lady Eagles, ranked No. 4 in the latest Class 1A poll, used a 19-14 fourth-quarter scoring advantage to secure the win.
The loss for University Lab (24-6) snaps an 18-game winning streak (19 games if the squad’s victory against Scotlandville in the Scotlandville/Madison Prep Hall of Fame Classic last month is included).
While Central Catholic coach Jamarr Garret said the win was one that “means a lot” to him, he said winning just this game wasn’t the goal.
“I think the win gives the girls more confidence, and gives them a clearer picture of what they are capable of,” he said this morning. “University is a very good basketball team, and I hope the girls realize that we are also. It doesn't stop here, though. We still have three very important district games left, and I don't want the girls to be satisfied with just this win. We travel to Gueydan today, and with a win, we set up a district championship game Friday at home against Hanson.”
In Monday’s victory, University Lab took a 13-12 victory after a period of play before Central Catholic edged the visitors 11-9 in the second period for a slim 23-22 lead at the half.
University retook the lead in the third quarter as it outscored Central Catholic 18-15 for a 40-38 lead after three quarters.
Meo Knight and Randi Brown both posted double-doubles for Central Catholic.
Knight had 23 points and 19 rebounds as well as four steals, one assist and a block.
Brown had 15 points and 13 rebounds as well as five blocks and four steals.
Other top Central Catholic contributors included Makayla McDaniel, nine points, three steals, two rebounds, two assists and a block; Megan Landry, four points, two rebounds and one assist; and Caroline Byrne, four points and one steal.
The Lady Eagles (18-7 overall, 5-0 District 8-1A) will resume district action today when they travel to Gueydan. Girls’ varsity is set for 5:30 p.m.
