To promote education on women’s heart health, CIS is holding a Women’s Wine and Wellness Event on Aug. 31 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the CIS clinic at 1231 David Drive in Morgan City.
The free event will feature screenings for ankle brachial index. These simple, painless screenings test the blood flow in the legs to determine your risk for heart disease. Screening results will be available on site, and CIS cardiologists will be available to answer questions and provide risk assessments.
Participants also will be treated to hors d’oeuvres, red wine sampling and have the opportunity to win door prizes. “This is an opportunity for women to relax and unwind while monitoring their health at the same time,” CIS officials said.
CIS is providing these free screenings to encourage women to learn the risk factors of cardiovascular disease and what steps are needed to reduce them.
Adapting a heart-healthy lifestyle and receiving appropriate medical care can help prevent cardiovascular disease. Common risk factors of heart disease in women include diabetes, high blood pressure, a family history of heart disease, smoking, obesity and an inactive lifestyle.
Anyone with these risk factors, or if experiencing pain in the legs such as cramping or swelling, they may be at risk.
