This Sunday, the Crossing Place Fellowship will hold its first annual 5K4Food race.

The race is a fundraising effort benefiting the Agape Orphanage in Kampala, Uganda.

The Crossing Place Fellowship is a Christ-centered church with campuses in Franklin, Morgan City and Kaplan. Pastor Brad Bullock heads the Franklin campus.

The race is a “new great cause started with a single church member,” Bullock said. “Canita Brent is a promising college graduate who postponed her dream of becoming a doctor when she felt the Lord call her to missionary work. A trip to Uganda changed her life, and she made the area her new home three years ago. Since then, Canita has expanded her talents to helping out the orphans in Kampala, and the Crossing Place Fellowship stands behind her efforts to feed, clothe, and provide shelter to these children.”

The 5K race will begin at Raintree Market in Baldwin, proceed down Ralph Darden Memorial Parkway past Cypress Bayou Casino, and end at the Bridge Ministry Center, the former Mary Hines Elementary School.

Ken and Austin Andrews from NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” will be on hand for the event.

After the race, many activities are scheduled such as a jambalaya cook-off, music, fun jumps, flag football, volleyball, and much more. Anytime Fitness of Franklin has partnered with the Crossing Place and will be handling registration as well as handing out gift bags for all participants.

In the spirit of the event, Pastor Bullock is planning a four-part sermon series entitled “The Call to Lose.” This series talks about the physical aspects of losing weight and also the spiritual aspects of “the ‘weight’ of things in life that slow us down and keep us from being all we are called to be,” according to Bullock

Tonight at 6 p.m. Austin Andrews will be at the Crossing Place Fellowship campus in Franklin as the guest speaker for an “Epic Friday” event that is free and open to the public.

Anyone is welcome to register for the race or donate money toward the 5K4Food’s goal of $20,000.
