MORGAN CITY, La. -- A motorist had to be extracted from her vehicle after it crashed into an apartment building this morning in Morgan City, and police are seeking the public’s help in identifying another vehicle involved in the wreck.

At about 7:45 a.m., Tina Hatcher’s car crashed into an unoccupied apartment building at 2414 Apple St., according to Assistant Chief Glenn Blanco of the Morgan City Police Department.

Hatcher said that as she was attempting to turn on to Acorn Street from Fig Street, she observed a blue truck making a right turn from Acorn Street onto Fig Street and that it made a wide right turn into her lane. Hatcher panicked and accelerated, Blanco said, losing control and striking the apartment building.

She was the sole occupant of the vehicle, and had to be extricated by the Morgan City Fire Department. She was taken to Teche Regional Medical Center and treated for minor injuries.

She was cited with careless operation, Blanco said.

“We are asking that anyone who witnessed the accident and can possibly help identify the other vehicle, described as only a blue truck, to please contact us at 985-380-4605.”

Chief Morris Price of the fire department said that two trucks, six on-duty personnel and six off-duty personnel responded to the call, which initially stated that a vehicle was on fire with an occupant in the vehicle. There was no fire.

“She actually got lucky by hitting the house,” Price said, because a pole and tree, which don’t “give” as much as a house does, were near her path.
