BALDWIN — The Catholic High of New Iberia Panthers earned a 35-20 District 6-2A win over the West St. Mary Wolfpack Friday at Wolfpack Stadium in the regular season finale.

With the win, the Panthers captured the District 6-2A Championship with a flawless 4-0 mark. Catholic High also spoiled the Wolfpack Homecoming with the win

West St. Mary (6-4, 2-2) turned back the Panthers on several goal line stands but failed to overcome miscues before falling to the highly-regarded Panthers. The Wolfpack gave up five interceptions while also losing a fumble while failing to score on a pair of fourth down attempts in the second half.

Catholic High’s Gabriel Fuselier gave the Panthers a 7-0 lead in the second quarter after scoring on a one-yard fumble recovery. Grant Nelson booted the extra point, giving CHSNI a 7-0 lead in the second quarter.

West St. Mary’s Kyler Jackson belted Catholic’s Joe Lisard causing a fumble of which teammate Robert Martin scooped up and raced unmolested 85 yards for the Wolfpack first score in the second quarter.

At the half, Catholic High nursed a 7-6 advantage.

In the third quarter, the Panthers scored three times for a 28-14 advantage. Rhett Gonsoulin hauled in a 73-yard scoring strike from Lisard before Blake Byrom added an 8-yard TD run before defensive back Elliot Broussard raced 70 yards on a interception return, giving Catholic High a 28-6 lead.

West St. Mary’s Jontrey Tillman scored on a 66-yard run before adding the two-point conversion, enabling the Wolfpack to trim Catholic’s lead to 28-14. Tillman finished as the Wolfpack’s top rusher with 140 yards on the night while Dixon added 130 yards of his own.

Early in the fourth quarter, West St. Mary quarterback Tre’vell Dixon scored on a five-yard run as the Wolfpack closed the gap at 28-20.

Catholic closed out the scoring after Joe Dworaczyk’s 30-yard interception return for a touchdown late in the final period.

West St. Mary (6-4, 2-2) will be looking for a berth in the State Class 2-A playoffs.
