The special two week period from June 21, vigil of the Feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, until July 4 is dedicated to this great hymn of prayer for our country.
Culminating on Independence Day, this special period of public and private prayer helps to emphasize both the Christian and American heritage of religious liberty.
The fortnight follows in the call the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops issued in April to “galvanize as one voice to defend the right to religious liberty … What we ask is nothing more than our God-given right to religious liberty be respected. We ask nothing less than that the Constitution and laws of the United States, which recognize that right, be respected.”
Parishes throughout the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux and the Diocese of Lafayette are participating in this special period of prayer. St. Joseph Catholic Church in Patterson hosted a Holy Hour on June 21 to open the fortnight. Churches have a special prayer after each Mass during this period. Everyone is encouraged to pray diligently as communities, families, and individuals to preserve, uphold and foster our religious liberties.
St. Andrew Church in Amelia has set an Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament for Adoration on Saturday, 1-5 p.m.
Fortnight for Freedom will close with Cardinal Wuerl celebrating a nationally televised Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Locally the churches will close with their Independence Day Mass on Wednesday, July 4, with 6:30 a.m. Masses at Sacred Heart in Morgan City and St. Joseph in Patterson, with the latter hosting a Holy Hour of Adoration following the Mass. At Holy Cross in Morgan City, the Mass will be at 8 a.m.; St. Bernadette in Bayou Vista, 8:30 a.m.; and St. Stephen in Berwick, 9 a.m.
People of all faiths are invited to join in awareness and prayer to preserve, uphold and foster religious liberty.
