City officials have a mission that they hope organizations, schools and businesses will accept.

The gateway signs can be decorated on each end of the city, and residents are challenged to put their design skills to use to beautify Franklin.

“The idea to decorate the signs comes from two people—Mrs. Alice Pecoraro and Mrs. Susan Guidry,” Mayor Raymond Harris said. “Mrs. Pecoraro asked if (the signs) could be decorated during the time of the Harvest Moon Festival, and Mrs. Susan Guidry did a good job of decorating.”

“I am not a decorator,” said Community Development Director Arlana Shields. “If you tell me where to put something, I can do that, but to come up with some of the decorating concepts that I see around the city and surrounding towns this Christmas, I’m not that creative.”

Two organizations have accepted the challenge to decorate the gateway signs for 2012. The Franklin Garden Club will decorate the signs for the month of July, and the Lions Club will decorate the signs in October. Ten other organizations, schools or businesses are needed to pitch in and lend their time and talent to Franklin.

To decorate the signs, email Shields at ashields@franklin-la.com with the following information: the name of the organization; the organization’s contact information and the month the members would like to decorate. Applications can also be made on the second floor of City Hall.

Shields asks that applicants indicate more than one month that they would be willing to decorate in the event that another organization has been granted permission to decorate that month. Each organization will be notified of the month it will be approved to decorate. Permission will be granted as the information is received.

Shields said that decorations cannot be attached to the signs with tape, glue, staples, tacks, pins or nails, which cause water damage and erosion. Decorations can include identification, which indicates who decorated the signs for the month.

A member of the organization should check the decorations during the month to make sure that they are neat and tidy and that items are not missing.
