As a result of the completion of the Bayou Chene flood control project, all restrictions have been lifted by the U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port, Morgan City.

Bayou Chene, in St. Mary Parish, is now open to all vessel traffic. Mariners are reminded to use caution while transiting the area at night.

Mariners may contact VTS Berwick Bay with any questions.

A barge was placed across the Chene in May to prevent backwater flooding from the large amount of water coming into the Atchafalaya Basin after floodgates on the Mississippi River at Morganza were opened to relieve pressure on the Mississippi’s levees downstream.

Contractors for the St. Mary Levee District have been working for several months to remove the barge and mostly return the area to its natural state.

Plans are in development for the placement of a permanent flood control structure on Bayou Chene.
