Crowley man charged with cannabis cultivation; alleged pot crop thriving in heat

CROWLEY – The drought apparently was affecting Kenneth Leger’s alleged cannabis crop.

The Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Department on Monday discovered more than 80 marijuana plants ranging in height from two feet to six feet that Leger, 63, of Mementau Cove Road was allegedly growing.

Deputies also found cultivating tools near the illegal crop.

Leger is charged with cultivation of marijuana and possession of a weapon in the presence of a controlled substance.

The Sheriff’s Department had received tips before that Leger was growing marijuana plants in the woods near his property. However,without knowing the specific location, it was tough for them in the thick wooded area.

On Monday, a tipster pin-downed the exact location.

“Sometimes these people who live way out in the country don’t think we’ll ever find a growing operation like this,” said Sheriff Wayne Melancon. “Then they’ll get careless and eventually someone will see the operation who will call the police.”

Agents with narcotics division conducted a search of property located near Morse. in the Mermentau Cove area. Agents search a wooded area and discovered 83 marijuana plants ranging from approximately two feet in height to six feet in height. Also discovered at that time were items used to cultivate the marijuana plants.

Narcotics agents then discovered a path form the initially discovered plants that led back to Leger’s property. Narcotic agents then spoke with Leger and conducted a search of his residence and property. Narcotics agent there discovered processed marijuana in the residence additionally along with the firearm. Five marijuana plants were found growing outside of the residence.

Leger was placed under arrest and incarcerated in the Acadia Parish Jail. Bond has been set at $20,000.
