David Franklin was born Aug. 4, 1940, in Franklin to Mr. Arthur Franklin Sr. and Mrs. Dora Cage Franklin. David was the ninth child of nine children. He grew up with his sisters and brothers, being the apple of his family’s eye, “Baby Dumpling.” He earned his nickname “Dump.”
He married Almetra Jones of Morgan City, closing the market on one of the parish’s most sought-after bachelors on Aug. 16, 1974. They were married for 37 years. Together they reared three girls, Trina, Tia and Davida.
Church/Religious Affiliations: He was baptized by Elder Charles C. Watkins Sr. at Triune Church of God In Christ in Franklin, where he served as a deacon, adult Sunday School teacher, member of the Trustee Board, member of the Mass Choir, member of the District Men’s Fellowship, member of Triune Church of God In Christ Nursing Home Ministry, member of Brother Ben Thibodeaux’s Nursing Home Ministry, and mentor for Patterson Young Men Jail Ministry. He had a passion for teaching — especially teaching the Word of God.
Education: Maryland Elementary School in Bayou Sale, Willow Street High School in Franklin, and he attended Southern University in Baton Rouge for three years.
Military Service: He was drafted into the United States Army, where he served as a Military Policeman. He received an Honorable Discharge.
Occupation: After the military, David returned to St. Mary Parish. He was a substitute teacher for St. Mary Parish School Board and also worked for a short period of time at St. Mary Community Action Agency as Director of Services after which he was employed by the Atlantic Richfield Co. at the Bayou Sale Gas Plant as an Oilfield Operator. He worked many years before retirement.
Organization: One of the founding members of 100 Black Men of St. Mary Parish and the Neopalities Civic and Social Club, and a member of the Promise Keepers Inc.
Community Involvement: An adopted grandparent for Snow White Head Start Center in Centerville, and former Chairperson for St. Mary Water Work District No. 5.
Life’s Departure: Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011, at 12:30 a.m., at Franklin Foundation Hospital.
David had many great friends whom he cherished. Just to name a few, Eddie “Flintstone” Verrett Sr., Gregory Prince, Joseph “Dardar” Lightfoot, Minister Don Moreaux Sr., Minister Gary Eave, Charles “Butch” Middleton, Frank Ficarato, Harold Sidney, Jeffery Carson, Alfred Daniel, Minister Benny Druilhet, Minister Wynord Thomas, Minister Ben Thibodeaux, Jeffery Beverly, John “Leda” Madison and Wendell Bogan. He often said, “people choose people, God chooses good friends.”
He leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife who loved him dearly, Mrs. Almetra Jones Franklin of Verdunville; three daughters, Mrs. Trina Trimm (Phillip) Dural of Verdunville, Mrs. Tia Trimm (Eddie) Verrett of Norfolk, Va., and Ms. Davida Franklin of Centerville; two sisters, Mrs. Savannah Franklin (Jeffery) Hadrick, and Mrs. Shirley Franklin (Arthur) Westley, both of Franklin; two aunts, Mrs. Florence Cage and Louise Quinn, both of Franklin; mother-in-law, Mrs. Ara B. Jones of Morgan City; four sisters-in-law, Mrs. Norma Skinner, Ms. Mary Elaine Jones and Ms. Lisa Jones, all of Morgan City, and Mrs. Ara Jones (Claudell) Ramagos of Schriever; four brothers-in-law, Mr. James Anderson of New Jersey, Mr. Herbert “Mike” Jones, Mr. Anthony (Edna) Jones and Mr. Conley (Melba) Jones, all of Morgan City; seven grandchildren; one godchild, Angelo Valteau Jr. of Dallas; and nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Franklin Sr. and Dora Cage Franklin; three brothers, Elliot Franklin, Arthur Franklin Jr. and Isaac Franklin; and three sisters, Nettie Franklin Anderson, Lucille Franklin Burgess and Earline Franklin Williams.
