MONROE – A day care owner has been sentenced to almost five years in prison for defrauding the state of about $120,000 in assistance for low-income parents.

Federal prosecutors said 37-year-old Angela Lafonta, owner of Tinkerbelle’s Day Care in Winnsboro and Rayville, was sentenced Wednesday to 55 months in prison and ordered to pay more than $16,000 in restitution.

She was convicted earlier of making false claims to the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services.

Prosecutors said jurors heard testimony that Lafonta submitted reimbursement claims for children that weren’t under her care. She also allegedly inflated hours of attendance on claims.
