Former Senate president

NEW ORLEANS – Services for former Louisiana Senate President Sammy Nunez, Jr. will be Wednesday at St. Louis Cathedral. He died Jan. 15 at age 81.

The St. Bernard Parish Democrat was Senate president from 1982-88 and 190-96. He was president pro-tempore from 1908-82 and 1988-90.

Nunez was instrumental in reforming the state budget process with establishment of the Revenue Estimating Conference. He was first elected to the Legislature in 1964. He moved from the House to the Senate five years later. He was in the insurance business.

Survivors include his wife Cynthia.

Former Tulane football coach

NEW ORLEANS – Services will be Tuesday for former Tulane head football coach Vince Gibson. He died Jan. 10 at ashe 78.

Gibson coached Tulane three years, defeating arch-rival LSU twice (48-7 in 1981 and 31-28 in 1982). He was a college coach for 23 years, serving as an assistant at Fla. State and Tennessee and as head coach at Kansas State and Louisville before joining Tulane.

After leaving Tulane, he remained in New Orleans and opened a sports-related travel business.

Survivors include his wife Marie, two sons and four daughters.

Outstanding Senior Olympian

CROWLEY – Services are Monday for Senior Olympics Hall of Fame member John Breaux Webb. He died Jan. 13 at age 83.

He was a La. Dept. of Revenue auditor before retirement. He competed in local, state and national Senior Olympic events, and was Olympian of the Year in 1998. He was inducted into the national Hall of Fame three years later. He was a former president of the Acadia Parish Council on Aging.

Survivors include his wife Louise, a son and a daughter.

Coca-Cola executive

BATON ROUGE – Services for Coca-Cola executive and civic leader Joseph “Darian” Chustz will be Monday. He died Jan. 13 at age 42.

He was president of the Gulf Coast Region of Coca-Cola Bottling Co. United. He was a board member of Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, Our Lady of the Lake Foundation, Baton Rouge Community College Foundation and Boys and Girls Club of Baton Rouge, among other organizations.

Survivors include his wife Lisa, two sons and a daughter.

Arrangements are by Rabenhorst.

Builder, banker

ERATH – Services are Monday for builder and banker Darnell Fontenot. He died Jan. 13 at age 73.

He founded Gulf Coast Homes and was on the board of the Louisiana Manufactured Housing Associated board. He was a cattle rancher for years and on the board of Teche Bank and Trust of St. Martinville.

Survivors include his wife Jeanette and two daughters.
