Former councilman

KAPLAN – Services were Thursday for former city councilman and oil and gas distributor James Herpin. He died Feb. 28 at age 70.

He was the youngest member ever elected to the Kaplan City Council, serving three terms. He was a Mobil Oil and Goodyear distributor.

Survivors include his wife Lois, a son and two daughters.

Enginnering firm owner

LAFAYETTE – Services will be Saturday for engineering firm owner Stephen Callegari, Sr. He died Feb. 29 aet age 64

He was a mechanical engineer and he and his wife Iris founded SRC Engineers, which catered to the oil and gas industry. He also founded SRC Materials Testing.

Additional survivors include a son and two daughters.

Arrangements are by Fountain.

Innovative librarian

SHREVEPORT – Services will be Monday for innovative school librarian Irene Cooke. She died Feb. 28 at ae 97.

While working at the Southwest Louisiana Institute (ULL) library, she established Louisiana’s first centralized elementary school library in the lab school there for teachers. Prior to that time, each classroom had had books only the children in that class could check out. She later worked in DeQuincy and Winnfield high schools.

Survivors include a son and a daughter.

Long-time psychiatrist

NEW ORLEANS – Private services for long-time psychiatrist Dr. Arthur Samuels. He died Feb. 27 at age 86.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War Ii and practiced in New Orleans for more than 50 years. Dr. Samuels served as Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at LSU School of Medicine, supervising numerous medical students and resident psychiatrists, and later served as Medical Director of the Addictions Unit at Eastlake Hospital.

He was an early practitioner of group psychotherapy, Gestalt Therapy, and Transactional Analysis. He co-led a series of pioneering inter-racial discussion groups for the New Orleans Human Rights Commission in Mayor Moon Landrieu’s administration.
