Long-time deacon

NEW IBERIA – Services for Diocese of Lafayette Deacon Kenneth Waguespack, Sr. will be Friday. He died at age 83.

He was a retired U.S. Army major and served as a deacon in many parishes of Acadiana for more than 30 years. He was an insurance agency owner and administrator in the Mt. Carmel and Catholic High expansion projects.

Survivors include his wife Emma and eight children.

Retired judge

PLAQUEMINE – Services for retired district judge Edward Engolio, Sr. will be Friday. He died July 11.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army China theater campaign in World War II and a retired U.S. Army Reserve officer. He was a 18th Judicial District judge for 23 years and the first judge in Louisiana to insist on women jury service.

Survivors include a son and three daughters.

Dental expert, professor

NEW ORLEANS – Services for retired military dentist and LSU professor Dr. Robert Brannon will be Saturday. He died July 9 at age 72.

After retiring as a colonel and as chairman of the Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Dept. at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology he was appointed civilian national consultant in oral and maxillofacial pathology to the Air Force Surgeon General, only the third person to hold the post.

He directed and participated in identifications of victims in many high-profile mass disasters including the Pan Am/KLM Airline Disaster in Tenerife, Canary Islands in 1977; the 1978 Jim Jones mass suicide of 913 people in Jonestown, Guyana; and the terrorist bombing of the U.S. Marine headquarters building in Beirut, Lebanon in 1983. Dr. Brannon was also a consultant to the USAF dental team for 52 repatriated Americans from Teheran, Iran in 1981.

At the LSU School of Dentistry he was director of courses in the dental, dental hygiene, and advanced education programs. He was the Head of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology from 2010-2012 and retired just days before his death.

Survivors include his wife Julie.
