Former county agent

LONG BRIDGE – Services for former Avoyelles County Agent Carlos Alton Smith will be Thursday. He died at age 64.

He was a teacher at LSU Alexandria before becoming county agent, a post he held for 27 years. He taught the Master Gardener course in Avoyelles and Rapides parishes in recent years.

Survivors include his wife Robin and a son.

Arrangements are by Escude.

Former Freeport publicist

NEW ORLEANS – Services will be Thursday for former Freeport-McMoRan executive and city spokesman Jay Handleman. He died Aug. 12 at age 77.

He was Freeport-McMoRan director of medial relations and public relations for a decade. He was also a former public relations director of the N.O. Recreation Dept. and deputy secretary to Mayor Dutch Morial. He was also former chairman of the boards of Public Affairs Research Council and Louisiana Council on Economic Education and on the boards of a number of civic, religious and professional organizations.

Survivors include a daughter.
