DECATUR, Ga. – Former Baton Rouge State Times-Morning Advocate editor and high school teacher Jackie Benton died Sept. 16 at age 74.
He was also former publisher of three newspapers in Baldwin County, Ala, and a sportswriter for the Dothan, Ala. Eagle. He was a finalist for La. High School Teacher of the Year and taught at Pointe Coupee Catholic and Central High.
Survivors include three children.

Decorated aviator
BATON ROUGE – Services for decorated aviator Garet Guynn will be Thursday. He died Sept. 16 at age 90.
He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross while flying 35 missions in the Central Pacific for the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was secretary-treasurer of Airtrol for 38 years.
Survivors include a daughter.
Arrangements are by Greenoaks.
Long-time journalist
BATON ROUGE – Long-time journalist Cynthia Woody died Sept. 17 at age 80.
She was an award-winning feature writer for the Morning Advocate-State Times from 1954 to 1981. After retirement she spent three years in China as Peace Corps volunteer.
No service is planned.
Former city marshal
OPELOUSAS – Services for retired policeman and former city marshal Clinton Beaugh will be Thursday. He died Sept. 17.
He retired from the Opelousas department as a major and was city marshal for 16 years.
Survivors include his wife Rounie, a son and two daughters.
Arrangements are by Sibille.
F. Strauss exec
MONROE – Services for businessman and civic leader Saul Mintz will be Thursday. He died Sept. 15 at age 80.
An architect by training, he was chairman and CEO of F. Strauss & Son - a wholesale distributor of grocery products and alcoholic beverages for many years. He developed a number of Monroe-area properties including Northgate, Eastgate and Twin City Plaza shopping centers. He co-founded Sunbelt Manufacturing and was a director for years of Central Bank and subsequently First Commerce Corp. New Orleans.
Survivors include his wife Jean and three children.
