SHREVEPORT – Services for former chief of staff at Physicians and Surgeons Hospital Dr. Joseph Shavin are pending. He died Dec. 30 at age 105.
He was the first gasroenterologist in Shreveport and at one time was the oldest employee of the US government when he retired from private practice in his 80s and went to work conducting physical exams for inductees at the Military Entrance Processing Station here.
Survivors include his wife Louise, a son and two daughters.

ALEXANDRIA – Services for civic activist Frances Spengler Hargis will be Thursday. She died Dec. 29 at age 88.
She was involved in a number of organizations and projects and was among the organizers of The Shepherd Center.
Survivors include a son and a daughter.

Baptist pastor, chaplain
PINEVILLE – Services for pastor, prison chaplain and Baptist missionary the Rev. Tom Fewell will be Wednesday. He died Dec. 29 at age 69.
He was a Southern Baptist minister and former director of Christian Social Ministry in Jacksonville, N.C. He was a prison chaplain in Huntsville, Texas, Ocala, Fla. and Allen Correctional in Kinder and chaplain with Rapides Regional Medical Center Hospice for more than 20 years. He pastored churches in Oklahoma and Louisiana.
Survivors include his wife Linda, two sons and a daughter.

Former LSU counselors' chief
BATON ROUGE – Services for former head of counselors of the Junior Division at LSU Carolyn Abernethy will be Wednesday. She died Dec. 28 at age 92.
She was a counselor in the East Baton Rouge Parish school system before joining LSU where she worked as head of counselors until retirement.
Survivors include two sons.

Cane farmer, business leader
ST. JAMES – Services will be Wednesday for sugar cane farmer and business leader Joseph “Bud” Falgoust, Jr. He died Dec. 31 at age 86.
He was a US Army Air Force veteran of World War II’s Pacific theater and held the Bronze Star. After retiring from farming he became a commercial real estate agent. He was on the board of 1st American Bank and Trust for more than 20 years and was a former St. James Parish Farm Bureau president.
Survivors include his wife Joan and four children.

Retired teacher, coach
WEST MONROE – Services are Wednesday for retired teacher and coach Amilca Fontenot. He died Dec. 30 at age 80.
He coached baseball and football at East Ascension High and was owner of Brittany Enterprise and Safety Marketing. He was a former minor league player in the Los Angeles Dodgers system.
Survivors include his wife Brenda, a son, a daughter and two step-children.
