Educator, School Board member

PORT BARRE – Services will be Wednesday for educator and long-time St. Landry School Board member Ronald Carriere. He died March 10 at age 80.

He was a teacher and principal at Port Barre High and retired as an assistant state superintendent of education. He was on the School Board for 37 years.

Survivors include his wife Patricia.

Arrangements are by Sibille.

Orthopedic surgeon

OPELOUSAS – Services for orthopedic surgeon Dr. Ladislas “Butch” Lazaro, III will be Wednesday. He died March 10 at age 75.

He began practice here in 1969, co-founding Opelousas Orthopedic Clinic with Drs. Robert Bordelon and Frederick Mayer. He eventually specialized in orthopedic surgery of the hand and was a founder of the Southeastern Hand Society. He was an early owner of Old St. Landry Clinic and a founder of Doctor’s Hospital and First National Bank.

Survivors include his wife Kay and two sons.

Arrangements are by Sibille.

Insurance exec

MONROE – Services for insurance executive Harold “Rick” Richter will be Saturday. He died March 9 at age 89.

He was a US Marine Corps veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was president of the Independent Insurance Adjusters of Louisiana and founded H.C. Richter & Co, which he later sold. He retired as executive vice president of Mid-South Group.

Survivors include his wife Margaret and four sons.

Arrangements are by Osborn.

Educator, honored coach

BATON ROUGE – Services for educator and coach William ‘Pop’ Dawson will be Wednesday. He died March 10 at age 76.

He held two master’s degrees in education and one in theology. He was high school coach of the year several times during his career in Arkansas.

Survivors include his wife Mary Ann and several children and step-children.

Arrangements are by Resthaven.

Water Board founder

PORT ALLEN – Services for former Water Board member Bessie Suggs will be Thursday. She died March 11 at age 86.

She was a founding board member and first secretary-treasurer of the West Baton Rouge Parish Water Board and was instrumental in getting water distribution facilities installed in the northern and western parts of the parish.

Survivors include four sons.

Arrangements are by Wilbert.

Educator, Baptist leader

ARCADIA – Services for educator and Baptist leader Margaret Sledge will be Wednesday. She died March 10 at age 88.

After graduation from Southwest Baptist Theological Seminary, she began the first weekday kindergarten program at First Baptist Church, Ruston. She then moved to Arcadia and was in leadership in the Bienville Baptist Association, on the board of the Louisiana Baptist Convention and active in the Women’s Missionary Union at the local, state and national levels. Her late husband Rupert was long-time Bienville Parish Clerk of Court.

Survivors include three children.

Arrangements are by Rose-Neath.

Ex-POW, long-time clerk of court

MANGHAM – Services for retired Richland Parish Clerk of Court Dan McKay will be Wednesday. He died March 10 at age 89.

He was a US Amry Air Corps veteran of World War II, captured by the Germans after his B-17 was shot down on a bombing raid. He was a Prisoner of War for 20 months.

He was Clerk of Court for 23 years and operated an abstract company until shortly before his death.

Survivors include his wife JoAnn, four sons and two daughters.

Arrangements are by Mulhearn.

Teacher, assistant registrar

MONROE – Services for teacher and former assistant registrar at Northeast Louisiana University and the University of Alabama Janis Miller will be Wednesday. She died March 9 at age 66.

She taught at Carroll, Wossman, Benton and Robeline High Schools.

Survivors include her husband Al and three children.

Arrangements are by Mulhearn.
