Two local seniors were among 20 state finalists for the Louisiana Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.

Berwick’s Abigail Ohlin and Central Catholic’s Caroline Byrne were among 10 female finalists named last week.

Holy Savior Menard Central High School’s Jade Moreaux of Alexandria and Gueydan High’s Trevor Derouen were named state winners Monday and now will compete for the national Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.

The quartet was among 20 of Louisiana’s top scholar-athletes who were named finalists for the state award. They were among 991 Louisiana applicants, who either were nominated by themselves or were nominated by principals, teachers, guidance counselors or coaches.

The award, given by Wendy’s and the Heisman Memorial Trust, recognizes outstanding high school seniors across the nation who excel in athletics, academics and community leadership.
