The Central Catholic Eagles and Lady Eagles both fell on the road Tuesday at Class 4A Vandebilt.

The Eagles, Class 1A’s top-ranked squad, fell to the Terriers, ranked 10th in Class 4A, 80-62, while the Lady Eagles, ranked second in Class 1A, fell to the Lady Terriers, Class 4A’s fourth-ranked squad, 73-61.

In the boy’s game, a rematch following the Eagles’ 65-61 victory in the third-place game of the Sunkist Shootout in Lafayette on Dec. 30 didn’t prove as competitive in the end.

The Terriers led 21-19 after the first quarter and extended its lead to 43-30 at the half.

The homestanding squad outscored the Eagles 19-10 in the third quarter to extend its lead to 62-40 before Central Catholic closed the game with a 22-18 fourth-quarter advantage.

Ironically, the win was the Terriers’ ninth straight, a streak the squad began after that initial loss to CCHS.

Lloyd Grogan led the Eagles with 22 points, while Dontrell Brown added 14. Josh Singleton and Tyler Hoffpauir added eight and seven points, respectively.

For Vandebilt Catholic, Lionheart Leslie and Elijah McGuire each scored 19 points, while Seth Ward added 14 and Tanner Whatley chipped in 13.

In the girl’s matchup, the Lady Terriers (21-4) led 25-21 after one quarter, 45-34 at the half and 58-46 after three quarters of play.

Meo Knight led Central Catholic (18-3, 3-0 in District 8-1A) with 25 points while Randi Brown and Makayla McDaniel each added 10 points.

Jewel Triggs paced Vandebilt with 17 points, while Shakira Harding added 17, Leah Washington chipped in 13 and D’Arcy Draper added eight.

The Lady Eagles will return to action on Monday when they start the second round of district play at home against Gueydan.

Patterson remains

perfect in district play

The Patterson Lumberjacks improved to 9-0 in District 9-3A play and 19-2 overall with a 65-47 victory against Kaplan on the road Tuesday.

The ’Jacks outscored Kaplan in every quarter except the third, when Kaplan outscored the visitors 19-11.

“Overall, I was pleased with our play,” Coach Ryan Taylor said. “We had a letdown in the third quarter but Kaplan had a lot to do with that. They played harder than us in that quarter, and we can't let that happen. The season is coming to an end, and we need to sharpen up a few things. We have a big game Friday against Abbeville. They have a good team and we are going to have to be ready to play.”

Dylan Sanders led a trio of ’Jacks in double figures with 16 points, while Trevon Stewart added 13 and Tremaine Lightfoot chipped in 10. Other ’Jack scorers included Deondre’ Skinner with six, Ginall Hall and Denzel Johnson, five apiece; Malik Garrett, four; Sherman Edwards, three; Dylon Charlot, two; and Terrike Phillips, one.

Morgan City falls

on the road

Elsewhere, Ellender overwhelmed Morgan City, 80-55, in District 8-4A play.

The Patriots led 19-10 after one quarter, extended the lead to 40-21 at the half.

The Patriots outscored the Tigers 19-17 in the third quarter and 21-17 in the fourth quarter.

Jalen Johnson led a trio of Tigers in double figures with 17 points, while Tyrin Watts scored 15 and Brannon Randle added 10. Other MCHS scorers were Jaylen Jones with six pints, Malcolm Watkins with four points and Carl Singleton with three.

With the win, Ellender improves to 20-7 overall and 5-1 in District 8-4A action, while Morgan City falls to 14-12 overall and 2-3 in district play.

Berwick falls to

North Vermilion

A big first quarter propelled North Vermilion over the Berwick Panthers during district action on Friday.

North Vermilion outscored Berwick 12-4 in the first quarter and 18-9 in the second quarter for a 30-13 halftime advantage.

In the second half, North Vermilion held an 11-9 advantage, while the Panthers outscored the homestanding squad 15-12 in the fourth.

Devin Tabor led the Panthers with 10 points, while Chaz Russo added seven. Other BHS scorers included Nick Osburn and Nick Canty, each with six; Joe Francois and Brandon Adams with three apiece; and Brandon Naverro with two.

With the loss, the Panthers fall to 1-23 overall and 0-9 in District 9-3A play.

Lumberjills fall

in overtime

The Patterson Lumberjills fell to Kaplan High School, 48-42 in overtime in a District 9-3A road matchup on Tuesday.

The Lumberjills (8-15, 3-6 in district play) were paced by Claudia Fine with 18 points, four rebounds, five assists, three steals and three blocks, while Nakia Brooks added 12 points, seven rebounds, an assist and three steals.

Other PHS scorers included Tiera Butler, four points and three rebounds; Tala Johnson, four points, seven rebounds and two assists; Chynna Williams, four points, seven rebounds, two steals and two blocks; and Alexis Webb with a rebound and three assists and three steals.

In junior varsity action, Kaplan defeated Patterson 27-11.

Jamiri Brown led the Lumberjills with three points, while Jazmin Evans, Grace Beadle, Shianna Phillips and Jamile Tate each scored two points.

In other girls basketball action, Ellender defeated Morgan City, 60-28, while Berwick fell to North Vermilion, 38-26.
