Former Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College football and track standout Earl King (1963-65) was inducted in the Mississippi Community and Junior College Sports Hall of Fame earlier this year in Pearl, Miss.

King was one of 15 members inducted into the hall of fame.

King’s Gulf Coast legacy began after he was ineligible to play his senior season at Biloxi High School after transferring to the Coast from Louisiana.

In the spring of 1963, he earned a full football scholarship after a tryout impressed longtime Gulf Coast head football coach George Sekul. He was a starter on both sides of the ball during the 1963 and 1964 seasons, playing running back and cornerback for the Bulldogs.

King’s hard work earned him Honorable Mention All-State honors along with letters in football and track.

As a sophomore, King averaged 5.7 yards per carry and was a First-Team All-State honoree.

He then earned a full athletic scholarship to the University of Southern Mississippi, where he lettered two years and was a captain his senior year.

Upon graduation from USM, King moved to Morgan City and began his career in the oilfield trucking industry.

King is also a 2004 Gulf Coast Athletic Hall of Fame inductee.
