NEW IBERIA – Investigation continues into a boating accident that killed a father and son Saturday.

Erath natives Leon Ortemond and his son David died when their high-performance boat caught fire in a canal at the Port of Iberia.

Deputies located the boat still smoldering against the bank of the Commercial Canal, which was approximately two miles from the boat landing at the Port of Iberia.

After the fire was extinguished, divers with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office Water Division assisted in the search for the passengers aboard the vessel.

Two bodies were recovered during the search.

The boat they were in was a high-speed 36 foot long Skater boat, known to reach speeds of more than 100 miles per hour. It is unknown at this time if high speed was the cause of the accident or who was driving the boat. The boat is said to belong to David.
